WMU chemistry professors recycle cooking oil as fuel

Students and community members bothered by fluctuating gas prices or who have interest in alternative fuel sources may be surprised to learn that cooking oil is being used for more than just cooking. Marc Perkovic, Steven Bertman and Brian Buffin, associate professors of chemistry at Western Michigan University, initiated a project in January, funded by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, that experiments with converting cooking oil into fuel for vehicles. "We didn't invent anything," Perkovic said. "People have been doing that for years -- in fact, the original Diesel motor was designed to run on peanut oil back almost 100 years ago."

FAQ about Cooking Oil and Grease Disposal & Recycling

Why shouldn't I just pour used cooking oil down the drain? Cooking oil and grease poured down drains can build up in pipes causing backups at home, into streets and the storm drain system. Proper disposal of your cooking oil and other greases and fats will help prevent a sewage backup in your home. Overflows can pose health and environmental hazards, polluting local creeks.
